Captain Scarlet

Kiko Milano 311 Poppy Red Velvet Passion Matte Lipstick

I bought this lipstick several weeks ago. I was looking for a bright, neutral based red that I could wear on date nights or during the day. Amazon now sell the core collection of Kiko, which is great, as it means I don’t have to traipse into central London every time I want to visit a Kiko store. Judging by the swatches online, and the name, ‘Poppy Red’, this lipstick seemed like it was exactly what I was looking for.

I was very impressed by the packaging. I’ve bought lipsticks from Kiko before but never from the core line. The lipstick tube is metal, heavy and solid, with a magnetic closure. It has a nice weight in the hands. The bullet itself is also embossed with the Kiko logo. I think it would make a lovely gift for someone.

Unfortunately, the lipstick itself was not the one. The actual formula is very patchy. I had to go over the same area three or four times to get decent pigmentation, and I still ended up with missing patches. The colour is bright, but not quite the right tone. I find it clashes with my skin and looks off, although that’s not the fault of the lipstick. It doesn’t quite look a Poppy red to me, more like a scarlet.

The lipstick was very comfortable. It felt like a gel formula on the lips, which may explain the patchiness. It felt very smooth and lasted well without any smearing or feathering, even without a lip liner. It wasn’t so awful that it’s put me off trying another shade. I think I will give it another go in a different colour and see if I have the same issues.

Final score 3/5
